During the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup match between India and New Zealand, a controversy erupted when New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr was initially run out by Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur. However, the umpires ruled the ball dead and called Kerr back to the crease, citing that the fielding team had stopped treating the ball as in play. This decision frustrated the Indian team, as they believed the run-out should have stood. The dead-ball rule, based on MCC law.
Harmanpreet Kaur fielded the ball at long-off and threw it to Richa Ghosh, who broke thestumps, seemingly dismissing Kerr. However, the umpires called the ball dead, stating that the fielding team and batters had stopped treating it as live play. But in the next over India got Kerr’s wicket.
