The IPL 2026 season is set to witness an important development as Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana prepares to join the Kolkata Knight Riders squad after obtaining the required No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Sri Lanka Cricket.
This move is expected to strengthen Kolkata Knight Riders’ bowling unit significantly as the tournament progresses.
Delay in Joining the Squad
Pathirana’s entry into the IPL 2026 season was delayed due to fitness concerns. The young pacer had been recovering from an injury and was undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of Sri Lanka Cricket.
Before granting permission to participate in the IPL, the board required him to complete fitness assessments and ensure he was fully match-ready. After successfully clearing these requirements, Pathirana received the NOC, allowing him to join his IPL franchise.
Importance of the NOC
The NOC is an essential document issued by a player’s national cricket board. It confirms that the player is fit, available, and permitted to take part in overseas leagues such as the IPL.
In Pathirana’s case, receiving the NOC indicates that:
- He has regained full fitness
- There are no international commitments preventing his participation
- He is ready to return to competitive cricket
This clearance paves the way for his immediate inclusion in the Kolkata Knight Riders squad.
A Major Boost for KKR
Kolkata Knight Riders have experienced a mixed start to their IPL 2026 campaign, particularly in their bowling department. The team has struggled at times to contain opposition batters, especially during the death overs.
Pathirana’s arrival is expected to address these challenges. Known for his unique bowling action and ability to deliver accurate yorkers, he is widely regarded as a specialist in the final overs of a T20 innings.
His presence will provide:
- Greater control in the death overs
- A wicket-taking option in pressure situations
- Improved balance to the bowling attack
Role in the Team
Once he joins the squad, Pathirana is likely to be used as a key bowler in crucial phases of the game. The team management may rely on him to:
- Bowl during the final overs of the innings
- Break important partnerships
- Deliver under high-pressure situations
Given his previous performances in T20 cricket, expectations will be high for him to make an immediate impact.
Timing and Expectations
Pathirana is expected to join the Kolkata Knight Riders camp in the middle phase of the tournament. Depending on his match fitness and team combination, he could feature in the playing XI shortly after his arrival.
Fans and analysts alike will be keen to see how quickly he adapts and contributes to the team’s performance.
Impact on IPL 2026 Campaign
The addition of a player like Pathirana at this stage of the tournament could play a crucial role in shaping Kolkata Knight Riders’ campaign.
With several important matches ahead, his experience and skill set could help the team gain momentum and improve their standings.
Conclusion
Matheesha Pathirana’s inclusion in the Kolkata Knight Riders squad marks an important moment in IPL 2026. His return not only strengthens the team’s bowling attack but also adds a proven match-winner to their lineup.
As the tournament progresses, his performances could be a key factor in determining Kolkata Knight Riders’ success.
